Rebel leader Wuchman Dhati was among those to trigger the initial uprising in 1791. Voodoo priestess Cecile Fatimann led a famous ceremony in which a pig was sacrificed and its blood drunk. Modern historians have tried to identify the specific cultural context of the pig's sacrifice. In many African cultures, political power was regularly linked to religious authority.
