Historians say that the attention these trees got was an early moment where Americans were thinking about protecting natural spaces. By 1864, California Senator John Connes introduced a bill in Congress to protect Yosemite Valley. As a result, tracks of Yosemite Valley were transferred over to the state of California for protection and became America's very first state park.
