The Importance of Complexity Theory in Cities

Cities are a really nice example because you can get tremendous order without planning. Back in our day, there were all these Indian restaurants on 6th Street in the East Village. Why were they there? No one planned it. There was no city planning that says 6th Street will be for Indian restaurants. I think there still is a flower market on 6th Avenue in the 20s. That was an emergent phenomenon that rose out of how the sellers of flowers or the owners of Indian restaurants were behaving. So that's just a natural phenomenon and emergent behavior that arises out of human business people behaviors.
