Caffeine is a diuretic. It causes us to lose fluid and, along with that fluid, to excrete sodium because of the effects of caffeine on various processes within the environment. One thing that works very well to maintain mood and alertness longer given a certain amount of caffeine intake is to consume at least an equal volume of water with your caffeine. And ideally, that water would contain maybe a small pinch of salt or some sort of electrolyte drink or powder rather.
