Is Lee a Great General?

Lee's name has come up a lot in your excellent war nerd civil war series. How would you assess him compared to the consensus? I'd say he was very good at defending Northern Virginia against a series of incompetent generals. Whenever Lee ventured out of his comfort zone and his comfort zone was that patch of territory, things did not go well. But for example, strategy meant that in this campaign, McClellan, who was totally panicked by this time, couldn't do anything.
