Are There Stereotypes of Adolescence?

There's so many stereotypes about adolescence. And one of them is this idea that they're self centered and only think about themselves. But really adolescents are out there trying to make change in the world for the better. If we scan their brains, they show differences in activation in these reward related areas when they're getting rewards. They show differences in cognitive control related regions when they're kind of trying to engage in persistence and do well on a task. So the environment really shapes not only how we view adolescents, but how adolescents themselves behave and how their brains develop.
