The Early Trials of Melphalan and Prednisone for Multiple Myeloma
In the 60s and 70s, we used low dose oral melphalan and prednisone to treat multiple myeloma. And then we used high doses of melphalan followed by stem cell transplant in the 80s. In the late 90s, thalidomide was found to be pretty effective for relapse and refractory myeloma patients. Around that same time, bortesib became the first proteasome inhibitor to get introduced in this disease because it has a boronic acid component.
