Scape-goating itself can be a form of apocalyptic myth-making. In Illinois, right-wing politicians seeking to hijack a bail reform law called the Pre-trial Fairness Act in order to change it into one that would lead to more incarceration. The idea that white people are under siege and that Democrats have surrendered them to the violence of black people is ubiquitous in right-wing media.
