There's much more transfer between modalities than a lot of the higher intensity work. If you are aiming to train for a 5k or a 10k, it's worth spending some time in that zone three doing things like tempo runs and tempo rides. Zone three is neither the most efficient way to develop speed systems nor lower intensity energy systems. It's just not really optimal for anything.
