The New Yorker: The Writer's Voice - New Fiction from The New Yorker
Camila and Ava's Story
Ava and I were playing in the meadow when Camila's phone rang. Ava had been picked up from school by a parent but they hadn't checked her out before leaving, she said. The voicemails included 17 new texts, 7 new voicemails, 3 from Camila and 4 from an unknown number. We waited forever underground to get the F train which was delayed because of a signaling problem. It would take ages for us to walk at Ava's pace and I couldn't call a car.
