In 1981 Dubravka Ugrasic published her much beloved patchwork novella Steffy Speck in the Jaws of Life. In 1988 she was the first woman to win the NIN award, the highest literary honor of the former Yugoslavia for Fording the Stream of Consciousness. She took a firm anti-war and anti-nationalist stand when war broke out in Yugoslavia; soon became a target of nationalist journalists,. Ostracized by the public and harassed by the media, accused of anti-patriatism and proclaimed not only a traitor and public enemy but also a witch.
