The Death of Congo Square

Jim Crow laws essentially eliminated free people of color from Louisiana society. Congo Square was a gathering place in the Tremé neighborhood just north of the French Quarter. St. John's Eve, and voodoo in general, was similarly legislated out of existence. Voodoo practitioners had a hard time getting permits for any kind of religious gathering.
