In 1844, Joseph Smith learned of credible threats of violence against him and his family. William Law becomes the appointed head of Reformed Mormon Church as they titled it on April 28, 1844. But establishing a new rival church would not be enough for the dissenters in Nauvoo. They felt strongly that they needed to oppose Joseph Smith on all fronts.
