Misery masterfully showcases the harrowing experiential reality of creating a work of art which requires many sacrifices and a willingness to suffer. Paul is stuck inside Annie's house, strapped to a bed, tortured, physically abused, verbally berated. This could be his own internal process of anguish on the creative journey. When Annie shoots the police officer, it can be read as a symbol of the psychotic state because it's a literal disavow of the law. A positive resolution to the hellish incident is confirmed at the end of the film when Paul is shown safe and sound after surviving the ordeal in Silver Creek, Colorado.
