Are You Getting at Something Other Than Physical Addiction?
I was wondering whether there's a distinction between physical substance abuse, such as addiction to cigarettes and alcohol, versus behavior addiction. Cigarette companies in the sixties routinely portrayed cigarette smokers as cool on yachts with super attractive mates. Arguably got hooked early by wanting to be cool, not realizing that this coolness would lead to adiction. In the world of social media, the addiction seems to arise from a craving for reward or validation. For example, my colleague, jonathan height, points to the increased prevalence of depression and suicide among tengirls that followed soon after the introduction of facebook.
