What's Going on Just Before the Official Surrender at Stalingrad?
Stalingrad was one of the most decisive defeats in world history. The battle for Stalingrad is part of Germany's overall war of annihilation against the Soviet Union, writes Peter Bergen. There were other considerations as well when it came to keeping German troops at the Caucasus from being trapped by Allied forces. A two-week long aerial bombardment that took an unknown number of civilian lives could be much higher than 40,000 killed.
