To get VAP, you got to get colonized with bugs probably in your stomach and then it moves up in your oropharynx. The biggest risk factor for VAP is how long you've been on invasive mechanical ventilation. Every day adds to the risk of VAP; per day risk seems to peak at about five days. So far they have a white blood cell count, a procalcitonin level, and one portable x-ray.
