The Importance of Democracy in the War

Orwell had much greater hopes particularly for the air force, a new branch of British power where meritocracy was built into it. The army Orwell thought was still in 1941 in the grip of the stupid people would have to become meritocratic too. In one of the more chilling lines he says of this thing he thinks has to come if the war is to be won under English democratic socialism we will still shoot the traitors but we will give them a genuinely fair trial and show trials are not hypocritical.
