Psychologists have found people report the highest levels of happiness when they've got so absorbed into something that they've lost a sense of self. In Buddhism, one of the main tenets is that centering a life on yourself is a condition right for suffering, unpleasantness. So Tibetan Buddhism especially is centered around compassion and empathy. The thing you're most struck by is the fact that they're uniformly calm, present, engaged, peaceful, content.
