Episode 251: Organ Donation with Drs. Vail and Goyal

Anesthesia and Critical Care Reviews and Commentary (ACCRAC) Podcast

CHAPTER

The Future of Organ Donation After Circulatory Death

Donation after brain death means that the heart is still pumping, meaning the organs are still perfused. Donations from circulatory death mean there's no circulation and so you're going to have some longer time where that organ is not being at least perfused in the way it normally is. If you had to choose, you'd probably pick an organ coming after a donation after brain death if you had to compare. In the future, those are going to take up a greater proportion of the organ donor pool. And also over time, the translate teams are better understanding which patients can successfully be transplanted from a donor after circulatory death.
