Is Emergence an Important Question in Philosophy of Science?
The concept of emergence has been controversial since it emerged in the 19th century. The emergentist is a person who thinks that organization of certain kinds gives rise to new features and patterns. It's like if you have a set of rules for how legos work, but once you put them together into complicated objects, you're better off describing their behavior in a new set of rules.
