The Evolution of the Erectines
The stone tool culture that they make is called the Aldewem. And they take pebbles and they make sharp edges on them. But the amount of shaping that habilis does is limited. This shape does not exist in nature. You have to carry this shape in your head. You impose the shape like a sculptor imposes shape upon the marble. So it's another thing, you know, why the erectines are such an important part of our evolutionary story. We see the beginning of something in terms of cognitive understanding, which we take for granted every day. We don't even bother thinking about it.
