I really think it has to do with what motivates you. If you find that you're on ladder rung 2 and you're not inspired to go to the next rung of the ladder, then that's fine. I would just continue, continue to invest in what's working because if you don't, there's going to be like four kids sleeping on futons in Silicon Valley eating ramen that are working 16 hours a day for almost no pay. So make sure that you continue to at least invest a maintenance amount of work.
