A year ago today, when Russia invaded Ukraine, we frantically tried to find Ukrainians to tell us what they were experiencing. In a completely random stroke of luck, we reached a man named Kuri Vasil in Western Ukraine. Now, he didn't speak English, so that was a mess, but his niece, Yulia Lopushinska, did, and she agreed to translate. The two of them were proud, they were defiant, they were sure Ukraine would win.
On the morning Russia invaded Ukraine, we called Yulya and Kurii. A year later, we’re calling them back.
This episode was produced by Victoria Chamberlin, edited by Matt Collette, fact-checked by Laura Bullard, engineered by Paul Robert Mounsey, and hosted by Noel King. Additional production help from Mykola Polosin in Kyiv.
