The Evolution of the Code Noir in St. Genevieve

Early on, the Code Noir did allow for enslaved people to earn money and buy their freedom. But as we progressed from the 17th century into the 18thcentury into the 19th century, fewer and fewer enslaved people were able to take advantages of the provisions in the Code. We do see it's limited numbers who are able to save up enough and get access to that because you had to get permission to do that too. Even in the colonial period, any person who gained their freedom could potentially become a property owner too.
