Al-Hitham's theory of vision was one of the crowning achievements of the Islamic Golden Age. In answering the question of how we see, he profoundly changed the field of optics. His study of light was notable for its empiricism, and he set out to test propositions experimentally. This has led to the common claim that al-Hatham invented the camera obscura.
