The Virtue of Liberty
There's a whole heritage to this libertarian way of looking at the virtue of liberty issue. Augustine wrote a massive book called The City of God, which is one of the great important books in Western civilization. Herbert Spencer was a great defender of this and of course going into the 20th century people like Mencken, Knock, and others. There's a very, very rich vein of order to be mined here.
