The film gave audiences permission to idolize and sexualize marlina dietrich, even while broadcasting. The fact that she would muddle conventional gender rolls paramount gave her an extraordinarily lucrative contract. Though technically sternberg was still married, all of hollywood believed that he and marlina were living together. She lost an enormous amount of weight after arriving in hollywood of her own volition because she did like how she looked in comparison to american actresses. And she maintained her new weight by essentially not eating.
