The sunk cost fallacy is an example of predictable failure of rationality that people make, says David Frum. It's when we give weight to costs they've already lost and allow them to affect our deliberations in ways that makes no sense given those costs are out of our control. In war, you disregard all of the costs you've already paid; it doesn't tell against continued prosecution of the war. Disregarding some costs actually makes endless wars possible, he says.
