What you probably would have done is just dumped a shipload of exposition in there about how everyone's competing for these things in bablas blas. And the way you've shown that is to make ernst a really, really good spy. I think the readers are going to find ernst to be extremely attractive as a character because he is not the physical force, tough guy that alex is. So when ernst betrays jessie, what i think will happen for the reader is, oh my gosh, why didn't i
