The Inborn Errors of Coenzyme a Metabolism

There are several inborn errors of coenzyme A metabolism that are mainly genetic disorders. The most common of these is a recessive gene for a defect in the pantothenate kinase enzyme, P-A-N-K,. That's the first step in synthesis using pentathenic acid. It's estimated that one to three people out of every million people have PCAN. In 90% of cases, it hits by age six and can start as early as six months old or as late as 12 years old.
