The Importance of Community Eating in the Great Leap Famine
The Great Leap Famine in Cambodia saw millions of people forced to live on farms. The state provided them with everything they needed, including food and work. This led to what is known as communal eating - a nightmare born out of supposedly good intentions. Mal felt this was part of that correction of someone's whole way of being. He said: 'It deprives people of one of their most basic human rights'
