Klaus: Mill was a utilitarian trained by his father to evaluate everything in terms of its usefulness. He rebelled against it and had a breakdown in his late teens because he realized that it was a joyless way of life. But he doesn't abandon utilitarianism. He still thinks it's the measure of things. And so then you have, and this is there in the essays and religion and a lot of his other writing too.
