Freud was writing this text in the later 1930s at a time of the progress of Nazism. He rereads the biblical story in a counterintuitive way to argue that Edapus, sorry, I don't impose this. Some people have been quite shocked by it. This is what they saw as an act of kind of Jewish self-hatred of Freud. But a figure like Edward Said has celebrated Freud's text, Moses and Monophism.
