Seven black sailors signed up for the last voyage of the Essex, the last crew members to do so. The Nantucketers were one of the few places where a black man could be paid the same as a white man. For everyone else on the ship, a whaling voyage was a desperate last resort. "You hear the shit and hear everything you're saying," says co-host Fernando Lopez.
