Gaudemore's the Pet by Nadine Gordimer

Several of Gaudemore's books were banned by the South African apartheid government. She was an absolute, she was a member of the ANC at a time when that was illegal. And as you say, she was censored for much of her life in South Africa. So she's on the side of the angels, historically speaking.
