The Success of Henry the Navigator

Henry the Navigator was able to succeed where previous voyages had failed. Portugal sought to step beyond its status as a small rum state on the Iberian peninsula. Henry wished to bypass the Muslim territories of Africa and trade directly with West Africa by the sea. At the time trading cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, mer, frankincense and pewter was monopolized by Arabs, Turks and other intermediaries vastly inflating the price before reaching Europe. A small sack of spices in Western Europe could be sold and earn enough revenue to purchase a house and provide for years of financial security.
