CHAPTER

The Importance of Spaced Repetition

It's like learning a phrase book. You can start sort of making these little mental roots in your mind. It kind of just flashes up like a GPS. Repeating what you're trying to learn on a regular basis is really one of the most effective ways to memorize anything. This tactic has a name: spaced repetition. Ebbinghaus, way back in 1885, discovered that repetitions spaced in time produce stronger memories than repetitions masked close together. So Tom will learn far faster if he studies the blue book for an hour a day every day of the week, rather than spending one day a week studying for seven hours.
