Haley's story raises some interesting questions in my mind, if you will. I think tier one could be broken up into multiple tiers. Are these people actually friends? Do you actually value their friendships that much? Do you value the dolls? Yes. The idea of secrecy being a tool to amplify a romantic situation is true. In certain right environments, perhaps a bit of secrecy is a bit fucking hot. But as you said, it's all of the details in the context here that make it not exciting and kind of a dog move.
