The Hierarchy of Consciousness
By the early 1900s, Western researchers were starting to put forward a hierarchical vision of consciousness. For 2000 years, Indian yogis had defined consciousness along very different terms. In yoga ken Buddhist traditions, what we in the West would call normal waking consciousness was not considered a state of wakefulness at all. So yeah, this classification is utterly arbitrary. It doesn't directly relate to brain function, we now know and it is clearly and entirely a product of culture Europeans basically painted a picture for us of their own fractured minds.
