Amphipolis and Thucydides's Proclamation

Brisitis, afraid of suckers arriving by sea from Theos, learned that Thucydides possessed the right of working the gold mines in that part of Thrace and had thus great influence. He hastened to gain the town of possible before the people of Amphipolis should be encouraged by his arrival with a hope he could save them. So on the other side of that coin, if Thracian might have inspired the Amphipolitans to fight, but as it happened the city surrendered before he arrived. And so perhaps we should be grateful that they did because it afforded him that switch of perspective on the war that proves so valuable.
