Drawing on the esoteric, depth psychology, mythology, and the work of Carl Jung, Harpur argues that modern materialism flattened the paranormal by forcing it into a false choice: either literal and physical, or imaginary and unreal. In doing so, we lost touch with an older, truer framework. A mode of reality in which encounters are symbolic, intelligent, and transformative without being reducible to hallucination or materialism.
Harpur refers to it as the daimonic realm, a middle world between mind and matter. A dimension where meaning takes form, myths are born, and the phenomenon adapts its appearance to the culture encountering it.
