"I was frustrated because my paintings did not touch that scale. I wanted to work on a one-to-one scale with the whole building," she says. "What if, on one day and then never again, this building could be made into an instrument by using the hollows and voids of this building? What if the entire structure were made to sound?" The project took three years before it got permission from Massachusetts state officials.
