The Meaning of the Crimean War for the Conflict in Ukraine Today
The Crimean War of 1853 to 1856 was a conflict fought between Russia and an alliance of France, Britain, and the Ottoman Empire. The war played a significant role in shaping national identity, but that role was contradictory. It fueled sense of national pride in defenders of Sevastopol for turning their defeat into a moral victory. Memories of Crimea continued to stir profound feelings of Russian pride and resentment of the West until 2006. Nicholas I could be unfairly derided by the liberal intelligentsia for standing up against the West in the defence of his country's interests. But it is just as likely that we will find ourselves at odds with each other over Ukraine if things don't change soon.
