The Northern Chant of England and Wales

England and Wales broke off from Gondwanaland about 500 million years ago. They drifted north as this ocean Iapetus closed, pulling the northern margin under a tectonic plate to the north. The southern uplands of Scotland are the margin where this collision took place. It's one of the two big mountain building episodes in British geological history.
