Cortes ordered moctezuma to once again go out and speak to his people. The emperor at first refused, remembering what had happened the first time he tried this. He went out on to the terrace of the palace and the crowd stretched out beneath him. 17 years ago, a similar crowd had watched his coronation inglorious ceremony. But now their faces were set hard and unforgiving on their captive king. One source known as the kodek ramires includes an aztec warrior in the crowd shouting back to moctazuma: "What is beeng said by this scoundrel montezuma? Or of the spaniards?"
