The annual release of carbon from dead wood is about hundred 15% of the carbon released by humans. So currently, eight % of the carbon stored in forests is stored in dead trees - so it matters. The interplay between fungi and saproxilic insects can have a significant effect on tree decomposition. Some people know those very fancy jewel beetles, but there are many other species to choose from.
