Tom Jones was a student of Raymond Carver's at the Iowa Writers Workshop. He came to San Francisco once and I brought some people to see him read because he fits into their romanticizing of this world. But Tom himself incarnate did not quite fit. At that point, he had quit drinking. He had very severe diabetes and was an epileptic. And then later his health problems did, they did him in eventually.
