Three years earlier castaba had said farewell to her newly minted lawyer husband. Was expecting his return to bring perhaps a more solidly middle class existence. But instead found herself sailing half way around the world, trying to get used to feeling of shoes on her feet and no veil over her face. They were detained in harbour for more than three weeks because gondy's pro indian agitation had already caused oback among some south african whites. There were threats to throw all indians on board both ships into the sea if they did not turn around and sail home immediately. I decided to stay and suffer. My active non violence began from that date.
