The Dutch and the West India Company
From the beginning, the Dutch were very serious about this settlement. Although it was primarily a business venture for a long time until it became something more. One tipping point comes in 1640 when they succeeded in breaking down the West India Company monopoly on trade. Initially, the idea was to trade with Natives for FERS, that then they would ship to Europe.
